Free healthcare, rent and food stamps... oh my!

Welfare Strategy

The welfare of the American people is very important and without it, many people would be hungry, homeless and very ill. I just read an interesting article about State Representative John LaBruzzo and his proposed idea of paying poor women $1000 for them to have their Fallopian tubes tied. The idea was created to help improve the worstening welfare system. Vasectomies would also be included for men who would like to participate. Many people are not happy with an idea of this nature. Having grown up on welfare myself, I thought I'd touch on this touchy subject.

My mother received financial help from the government because my father never paid child support. We were raised on food stamps, HUD, government check and we also received a medical card for healthcare. My three sisters and I had the best money could buy - for free.

Now I work full time, take care of my home, cars, etc. I pay my taxes. I struggled to make it out of that house into a lifestyle of relying on myself rather than others. Hell, I hate relying on someone else for a ride if my car is in the shop. Now that I've created my life on my own, health insurance costs are high but I have to pay them. When I'm hungry, I have to buy groceries. I pay a mortgage. I don't get anything for free. Actually, a portion of my 30% income tax helps pay for these programs.

I think taking care of children should be the job of the parent rather than the government. People cry about government yet they rely on them when they don't know what to do. Why can't we punish our children uncle sam? I got a back hand across the mouth when my lips uttered negative words to my mother but I turned out good. Why shouldn't it continue? That is a topic in itself so I will get on with it.

Quit having babies if you can't afford them! Quit adopting children for the huge check! Get off your lazy ass and get a job! Quit relying on mommy and daddy to bail you out. Quit relying on the government to raise your children!

I made it out of our poverty stricken home because I had a desire and dreams. I worked hard for those dreams. While everyone else was doing their regular, I was putting in 150%. It's not easy, but you have to do what you have to do. By the way, my father eventually paid back the government so I no longer feel like I am a government baby.

I say don't reward them with more free money to do something smart, but put a limit on how many children they can have and still receive welfare. If they can't take care of one child, why should they be paid to take care of three more? These people know how to game the system just as well as any educated player. These people need to find themselves and learn what they are doing to the economy. Baby after baby. Dollar after dollar. Laziness in mass production. Everyone has the same opportunities.

ok first off it is the governments fault as to why so many people are on welfare for one they tax people to death two the cost of living is sky high three our public schools suck four if you have ever noticed the rich get richerand the poor get poorer five whats minimum wage like $7.00 an hour six gas prices etc seven if you do work and you make $9.00 an hour ,which is what an average person makes if you could not afford to go to colledge the government says you make enough money to have a good life now thats a fu..ing joke .also the one thing that really makes me mad about your blog on this is that you do sound a lot like a communist by saying that the government should be able to tell you how many kids you can have . also just one other thing mr fran likes the picture of those poor people to me that picture is sad looking broken down people brought down by a broken system.

scott on this issue i know there are some people who abuse the welfare system but there are alot who dont as you grew up if that system wasnt there who knows what would have happened to you and your family. You have to admit you were very lucky to be where you are today you at least had a mother and father who loved and cared for you and that taught you right from wrong a lot of people who are on welfare never had any one or anything to fall back on life is hard sometimes and who are we as human beings to really judge anyone .also you say look at what those people on welfare are doing to the economy well look at what are government financial institutions have done to the economy know because of the government we will be paying that 700000000000 billion bailout plan with our hard earned money causing even more people to be on welfare

Thank you lurb you have some really great points there as you've wrote just as much as I did in one entry! I do not judge because I do not want to be judged, but people have an opportunity whether they see it or not. It is up to them to act upon it. I am not going to have a child because I don't want my child to grow up in a world like this... a world that spits in their face... a world they can't get a loan for a house... I did it. I know it is hard. It is very hard. But now that I'm out of that life, I don't want to go back... I'm never going back as long as I can help it. So why would I want a kid to experience the same things? Children become adults and evil is the problem. They will steal from me because I have something that I've worked for. The bible tells us that a lazy hand will go hungry.

Myth: A Huge Chunk of My Tax Dollars Supports Welfare Recipients

Fact: Welfare Costs 1 Percent of the Federal Budget

Widespread misperception about the extent of welfare exacerbate the problems of poverty. The actual cost of welfare programs-about 1 percent of the federal budget and 2 percent of state budgets (McLaughlin, 1997)-is proportionally less than generally believed. http://www.apa.org/pi/wpo/myths.html

Now, don't assume by this that I do not believe there is no abuse of the welfare system, I have seen the abuse myself. However, I also have known quite a few people that it has helped. So while I do think there is some major reform needed, I can't see abolishing the entire system, and no matter how much I would like to demand people stop reproducing if they can't afford the children, I don't think I would want to live in a Country that had that much control over my freedom (see China)

I think everything from this, highways, research and government in general needs to be totally rethought.

Scott, the welfare system was implemented by LBJ in the 60's through the Great Society as a form of reperations. Later on it was modified multiple times due to constant abuse and here we are now with ILLEGAL ALIENS and people like Heather, Steph knows whom I'm talking about, that bleed the taxpayer of as much as they can get. She now is getting taxpayer funded college, how the fu@k is that possible? Until the Liberals get their collective heads out of the sand and make major reforms then the system will continue to reward these lazy, manipulative dead beats until we are all broke. Sure, people need help, but for how long? Kill 2 birds at once, send the ILLEGALS back home and put the people on welfare into those jobs and then we fix 2 major problems at once. See ya!

For what did God say to Jesus? "THE POOR WILL BE WITH YOU ALWAYS." Sometimes we forget that small saying. For the meek and mild shall inherit the earth, not the rich man!!!
