Dear Mister Taxman

As we all know, the government has always used money from it's people to fund it's endeavors - whether war, oil or any other domination tactic in the book. Lately it seems as if they are finding more and more ways of taxing things we use everyday. Is money so powerful that our country puts it's interests into finances rather than the health and prosperity of the people? What if I don't agree with what the money is being spent on? Can I choose where my tax dollars go? I wish it worked that way.

Taxes

I am a 28 year old with no children yet I pay school taxes and when I was in school myself, I remember additional costs that made me wonder where all the money went. There were book fees, lab fees, sports fees, after school events and so many more money sucking ways of taking my parents' money. So why should I pay for a school I will never use? Why should parents continue paying for a school 20 years after their kids graduate? When and if I have children, paying school taxes would be another story.

I use the Internet for research and therefore have no need for my public library, but I sure seem to have to pay for that too. Was I in favor of an Iraq war bill that has increased our deficit to record numbers? No, I most certainly did not! Who asked me?
Everyday I drive down the same pot hole infested roads where commercial trucks make money off my time. Not only do they ruin the road and destroy my car, but I find them being the cause of most slow traffic situations. People are continuing to find ways to make a buck off of other people's time. What's even worse is the growing number of toll roads. Not only do your taxes go to fixing the roads, but you also have to stop and pay each time you drive on it. What an automated, easy money generating system!

To top it all off, the rest of my hard earned money is paying the salaries of these politicians that claim to care for me. Not to mention the tax I pay on everything I buy or sell. I am more than happy to pay for what I use. I see no problem in that but to me, these policies created by rich men with no heart have no value to the American people.

Should Americans pay taxes for what they don't use?

Yes
No

Scott, I began commenting over two hours ago! I need to get to bed.

In this string you are leading up to the incredible decision to vote for Mr. Obama. Well, his administration will not be friendly towards your tax burden. The average wage-earner MAY come out ahead for a little while, but the small businessman like you is going to find things a lot worse in no time!

You seem a little confused on the being "taxed for things I don't use." The roads (interstate commerce), the military common defense), and even the library (general welfare) are part of the legitimate uses of tax money. Public schools fall in the same ballpark as the library - the general welfare clause. The preamble of the Constitution lays it out pretty clearly. The body of the constitution states what the government can do. Amendments were added to further LIMIT government. But that is not how it turned out, is it?

It's a heck of a system, but it's seems to be one of the best going. Scary, huh?
