Move away from the ocean - it is dangerous stupid

Hurricanes are dangerous. We all know that!

I wrote another blog about the topic of disaster relief a few weeks ago and with Gustav hitting the gulf coast recently and two more on the way, I thought it was important to bring it back up. I just read that the American Red Cross has used borrowed money to help those affected by Gustav and their VP is asking all Americans for donations.

When disasters such as these hit other countries, our government donates millions of our hard earned dollars. When will our back get scratched?

I am a very caring person with a strong concience. I always ponder on things that most people do not. I hope no one takes me the wrong way when I say the things I do, but to be honest, it is all common sense. It is hard enough for the American people to pay bills with gas, food and energy prices as it is. Taxes are going up, insurance and the overall cost of living. How much more can we be sucked dry?

Forclosure is at it's highest rate in years and they are asking for more money to pay for someone elses problems? I would think that hurricane after hurricane people would get the point and move away. Yet they continue to rebuild, waste money and cause emotional distress among the rest of the American people. We really do care about the people who are affected, but when do we draw the line and let them help themselves?

On the flip side, when life is good, they don't give it much thought when they charge us high prices to visit their coasts do they? A three day fishing trip costs me and four of my friends $2000 and this doesn't even include travel and lodging. They are quick to profit off our money and quick to request it when they can prevent issues such as this from ever happening again. Move away!

Does this make sense to you?

The answer is not to move, but to prepare. In Peru, for example, they don't worry about rain on the coast. The mountains get it all! But they do have earthquakes.

Ancient walls are made of mud, but stay forever. Modern walls are made of concrete reinforced with still. When the earth shakes, they don't fall in.

Florida gets most of the hurricanes in the US. It also gets the most tourists. This is because it is the closest thing on the mainland to "Paradise." Moderate weather (I went swimming on New Years Day - outside - one year on vacation in Orlando) means very long growing season for fruits and vegetables. And animals have it made as well.

The answer instead is to BUILD to weather the storms. Indeed, they need to learn to "help themselves."
