Fork and knife... a thing of the past

Actually, eating utensils are relatively modern inventions. The knife, of course, has been around since men first learned to work metal, perhaps even before. The fork is probably descended from meat hooks, and the spoon is a small bowl with a handle.
In ancient times, food was cut, poked and bitten. Bread was used to hold onto the other food - it still is in many parts of the world. Liquids were drunk from a bowl (we shrunk the bowl and call it a spoon).
